O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at your will the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead your captive people into freedom.
Isaiah says about the Messiah that he will have the Key of David on his shoulder, and that when he opens, no one will be able to shut, and when he shuts, no one will be able to open. In this antiphon, we call on this Messiah, asking him to open Heaven to us. He is the only one who could open, and when He has opened Heaven, no one can close it from us again.
In an earlier antiphon, O Adonai, we asked Jesus to free us from our captors. Today, we ask Him to free us from death. Death is the true captor of humankind… we can’t escape death. However, if we have faith in Jesus and live according to His will, He will bring us to Heaven, where we will be free from the everlasting death of Hell. The Saints in Heaven still live! They have been freed from death to live with the Lord. We pray that he will bring us to live with Him, too.
