Our Song

Well, as usual, I’m late to the party, but I thought I’d share about “Our Song” because it is cute and romantic and I’m feeling the need for cute and romantic today.

So, Katie at NFP and Me asks:

What was your song? Share a video if there is one!

Our song is “What the World Needs Now Is Love” by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, as performed by Jackie DeShannon. I see that there is a video, but I am not able to post one, maybe I’ll come back and figure out how to do that later.

Did you always have a song or did you have to find one?

We didn’t always have a song. We had never really danced, since Brett is not a dancerat all. We have pretty different taste in music (although over the three years since we chose our wedding dance song, we have found a lot more in common). We actually chose this song while watching “Austin Powers.” It is the song that Burt Bacharach sings on top of the double decker bus when Austin and Vanessa are falling in love. We actually tried to find a recording of Bacharach himself singing it, but we settled for the better-known (and easier to find) DeShannon recording.

Why did you pick this song?

I think we picked it because it was cute, true, and somewhat spiritual. Also, as I said, we didn’t really have musical taste in common, so we found something that was positive and pleasant to both of us. I liked the idea also that it wished love “No, not just for some, but for everyone.” I hope that everyone finds the love they need, whether from family, friends, a spouse, or God.

What does it mean to you now?

It reminds us of our wedding day and our commitment and love for each other. One of us will request it anytime we are at an event where there is dancing. That might be the only time I get Brett to dance, but we spend those few minutes in each other’s arms. The great thing about it is that it gets other couples on the floor, too, so we don’t have to stand out and look like fools.

How has the meaning changed since you first chose it?

Obviously, at first, we couldn’t be reminded of our wedding day, but it has always been the same in wishing love for all.

Won’t you share a picture of you two dancing? (Doesn’t have to be a wedding picture!)

You can see more stories and share your song at NFP and Me.
